JOHANNESBURG-2 November 2024: The Johannesburg Zoo came alive last Saturday as hundreds of participants gathered for the 13th annual Nappy Run, an initiative by the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD).
The event, which combines athletic achievement with social responsibility, successfully highlighted the awareness campaign for nappies for children and adults with disabilities.
The Nappy Run, initiated in 2011, addresses a critical yet often overlooked need for persons with disabilities. On average, monthly costs of nappies can range from R800 to R1,200 per person. This is a steep price for a lot of people, especially to those that rely on the social SASSA grants. This essential need affects both children and adults, with a lot of individuals requiring nappy assistance nationwide.
“The Johannesburg Zoo venue isn’t just about creating a scenic route,” explained NCPD Executive Director, Therina Wentzel. “It represents accessibility and inclusion, demonstrating that recreational spaces should be open to everyone. The flat terrain and paved pathways make it ideal for participants of the Nappy Run and those using mobility aids.”
This year’s event was made possible through the generous support of major sponsors including Epiroc and Marsh, who collectively contributed immensely to the event’s nappy collection drive.
The 5km run saw exciting competition among participants, with seven-year-old Ditheto Mbatha from Kempton Park crossing the finish line first, followed closely by Kamogelo Mogoane from Phalaborwa (Limpopo) and Schalk Lienberg from the sponsoring company, Epiroc. Dina de Canha was the first woman to cross the line, with Samkhelisiwe Mbonani (also 7 years old) being the 2nd child to cross the line. The top three overall winners were deservingly awarded prizes.
Each finisher received a commemorative medal and a goodie bag, celebrating their participation at this worthy cause.
“This is a very recommendable cause to participate in,” said celebrity guest Tylo Ribeiro, Mr. Supranational South Africa 2023. “It’s my second year taking part in this event and I would like to encourage everyone to attend the 2025 edition.”
Bulk donations continue pouring in, ensuring that distribution will be done to care facilities and families in need across the country.
