Celebrating the Impact of Heroes Unite: Thank You to Disney Africa and Comic Con Africa

The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) is excited to share the success of our Heroes Unite campaign, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous support of our partners: Disney Africa, Comic Con Africa, and Mr Price. Together, we continue to make a meaningful difference in support of children and youth with disabilities through the sale of Marvel-inspired wristbands and the incredible engagement at Comic Con Africa.

This year, our Heroes Unite campaign reached new heights with the launch of the Junior Super Hero Training Academy, made possible by the generosity of our partners. The training academy, held at Comic Con Africa, was a resounding success, with many young participants taking part in fun-filled training sessions inspired by their favorite Marvel characters. To top it off, participants received Junior Super Hero membership cards and won fantastic Disney prizes. The excitement was palpable, especially when attendees had the chance to meet some of South Africa’s own sporting heroes and take photos with Marvel icons.

Partnerships That Inspire Change

The NCPD is deeply grateful to Disney Africa for their continued partnership and generous support of the Heroes Unite campaign. This is the fourth collaboration between NCPD and Disney Africa, following three successful initiatives under the Disney Princess banner and last year’s inaugural Marvel campaign. Disney’s commitment to empowering youth with disabilities is reflected in their contributions, which help promote inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities across South Africa.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Comic Con Africa for providing us with complimentary stand space at this year’s event. This platform allowed us to promote the Heroes Unite campaign, raise awareness, and generate funds for this vital initiative. It was a powerful opportunity to connect with the community and highlight the importance of supporting youth with disabilities.

A Memorable Moment with Our Heroes

“One of the most heartwarming moments at Comic Con Africa occurred when a young boy proudly walked up to our stand, wearing his Heroes Unite wristband. He excitedly shared that he had purchased it from Bounce, and we had a mini celebration right at the stand. Seeing the joy and pride on his face truly made our day. Even more touching were the visitors who came by with last year’s wristbands, looking to refresh them. The loyalty and enthusiasm from our supporters are both humbling and motivating, reminding us of the powerful community that has formed around this cause.” Says Ado Bakasa, NCPD Coordinator Youth Affairs: Vava iYouth.

The team had an incredible time meeting all the creative fans

Kat, our beloved Paralympian, was the highlight at the Training Academy in Hall 7. Her warmth and cool demeanor made the kids absolutely love her. They couldn’t resist touching her heavy medals and taking countless photos with her. It’s been heartwarming to see the joy she brings to everyone around her. Our star, Zion, proudly wore all of Kat’s medals.

South Africa’s Paralympians and Olympians not only interacted with the young heroes-in-training but also took photos with the children, proudly wearing their hard-earned medals. One of the most touching moments of the day was when one of the runners decided to make the day even more special by gifting his medals to the kids. It’s moments like these that highlight the true spirit of the Heroes Unite campaign—bringing people together to inspire and empower the next generation.

We are incredibly grateful to the athletes who shared their stories and made a lasting impact on the young participants, proving that with courage, resilience, and determination, anyone can be a hero!

The Impact of Your Support

Through the sale of Marvel-inspired wristbands, available at BOUNCE: Africa’s Largest indoor Trampoline Parks at Menlyn Maine, Fourways Mall, Cornubia Mall and Mall of Africa, and from www.ncpd.org.za for R30.00 each, we are able to raise crucial funds that go directly towards the Vava iYouth project. This youth-focused initiative empowers young persons with disabilities through various programs, including access to assistive devices and job preparation programs.

Looking Ahead

“As we look back on a successful campaign, we want to express our gratitude to every individual who purchased a wristband, visited our stand, or shared their experiences on social media. Your support helps us break down barriers and create a more equitable society for persons with disabilities.” Says Lebogang Boya: NCPD Senior Manager: Economic Empowerment.

To everyone who has been a part of this journey with us, thank you. Together, we are heroes uniting for a better tomorrow.
