Fanie du Toit has been awarded the prestigious LIGkonsert Matthys Roets Award of Hope, in recognition of his dedication to advocacy for disability rights, inclusivity, and accessible communication for individuals who have hearing loss.
Fanie’s work is driven by a deep commitment to a society in which every person is acknowledged, included, and empowered to participate fully. He focuses particularly on individuals who have hearing loss who do not use South African Sign Language as their primary mode of communication, drawing attention to the unique challenges and needs they face, raising awareness, promoting accessible communication, and advocating for reasonable accommodation and the removal of barriers that limit people’s participation in society.
Not only is he a mentor for National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities’ Hearing Loss Matters project, but also serves on the board of HearUs, an organisation which provides financial assistance to individuals with significant hearing loss from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. He was also involved in the development of the ‘Road to Independence’ model and protocol, which fosters independence and meaningful participation for persons with disabilities.
Furthermore, in his capacity as a radio presenter for Radio Sonder Grense and other radio stations, Fanie plays a vital role in bringing the lived experiences and challenges of persons with disabilities to the public’s attention. Fanie’s work reminds us that disability is not just about an individual’s limitations, but also about the barriers created by society. True inclusivity begins when we acknowledge these barriers and deliberately work to break them down.
The Award was presented to Fanie by Solidariteit/Helpende Hand Forum for Persons with Disabilities, who said “Fanie, we thank you for your sustained dedication, your voice, and your contribution toward a world where everyone belongs and can participate in a meaningful way. Our dream of an inclusive world where everyone belongs is a dream we can all help to build.”
