Raising Awareness

Members of our staff met President Ramaphosa at the _________ Expo

In today’s information-driven world, where knowledge, opportunities, and experiences are often just a click away, it is easy to assume that persons with disabilities enjoy the same level of access as their non-disabled peers.

However, despite living in a democracy and an era of unprecedented connectivity, many persons with disabilities continue to face significant barriers, whether in accessing meaningful employment, participating in recreational activities, or fully engaging in cultural and social life.

The reality is that inclusion remains far from universal. Too often, persons with disabilities are still placed on the margins rather than recognised and included as active participants at the centre of society.

In the Media

This is why raising awareness about disability, impairment, inclusion, and rights remains essential. Guided by key frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and South Africa’s White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the NCPD works to spark deeper understanding, shift mindsets, and promote equal access for all.

Our awareness-building efforts include:

  • Conferences and summits
  • Public displays and activations
  • Broadcasting initiatives across radio and television

As part of our ongoing media outreach, we also support the development of disability-focused content for a number of radio programmes. We encourage you to tune into Leefwereld van die Gestremde on Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) every Sunday at 11:00, for conversations that spotlight real experiences, challenges, and triumphs within the disability community.

Puppet shows

Lisa & Friends is an awareness & sensitization project with themes that address the negative attitudes and beliefs about persons with disabilities.  These are aimed at children and teaches them about impairment and disability from an early age, so that they grow up knowing about diversity and ways in which to interact with persons with disabilities.
